The Body-Swing Connection

A body-swing connection refers to the relationship between an individual’s physical capabilities, identified through a physical screening process, and their golf swing mechanics. Finding a body-swing connection means determining whether a golfer’s swing issues stem from physical limitations or technical flaws.

Many times, we will want to make a technical change to a golf swing, but are limited in what we can do based on the students physical limitations. This is when we might refer you to a fitness professional, or teach around the limitation through variations in the technique. The process begins with the physical screen.

TPI Questions

  • A TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) golf screening is a series of physical movement assessments designed to evaluate mobility, stability, balance, and movement patterns that may influence your golf swing. The results help us understand how your body moves and develop a more personalized approach to improving your game.

  • Every golfer has different physical capabilities. A TPI screening helps identify movement limitations that may influence swing mechanics, consistency, or power. By understanding these limitations, we can make swing changes that better match what your body can comfortably and effectively do.

  • You’ll complete 16 movement assessments that evaluate areas such as posture, rotation, mobility, balance, and stability. These tests help identify movement patterns that may influence your golf swing. Your instructor then uses the findings alongside your swing analysis to guide your development plan.

  • No. TPI screenings are designed for golfers with a wide range of physical abilities and experience levels. You don’t need to be particularly strong or flexible. The purpose is to better understand your current movement capabilities, not to judge your fitness level.

  • TPI physical screenings are included in our comprehensive Game Evaluation, rather than a standard golf lesson. This allows us to evaluate your movement capabilities alongside other aspects of your golf game and develop a more complete improvement plan.

  • TPI screenings are conducted by Seth Svejda, PGA, a TPI-certified golf instructor at Ken Schall Golf Performance Studio in West Des Moines, Iowa. Seth uses the results to better understand each golfer’s physical capabilities and personalize instruction.

  • It may help identify physical limitations that affect your ability to rotate, maintain balance, or generate speed. Addressing those limitations through appropriate coaching and, when needed, qualified fitness guidance may improve your potential for distance. However, additional distance is not guaranteed.

  • Yes. Junior golfers can benefit from understanding their movement capabilities as they develop, while older golfers may benefit from instruction adapted to changes in mobility, balance, and flexibility. The assessment is individualized to each golfer’s abilities and goals.

  • A TPI screening can help identify movement limitations that may affect how you swing the club, but it is not a medical examination and does not diagnose or treat injuries. Golfers experiencing pain should consult an appropriate healthcare professional before performing uncomfortable movements.
